Watch "Shawnee, Ohio" TODAY Online at 5PM EST
Tune in TODAY at 5:00PM (EST) for the premiere screening of a new film version of Shawnee, Ohio
Hello All --
A quick reminder that the screening premiere of Shawnee, Ohio takes place TODAY (3/9) at 5:00PM EST. It is FREE and ONLINE only. There is no need to sign up -- just go to this page to watch. It is presented by the Wexner Center for the Arts. I am very excited to share it with you, and hope you can tune in. It will be followed by a live Q&A session including the Mayor of Shawnee, Bev Trovato, community organizer John Winnenberg, and myself. It will be facilitated by Lane Czaplinski, Director of Performing Arts at the Wexner Center.
This is also my premiere for Creative Capital -- a national arts organization -- and their support over the past five years has been invaluable. It has been eleven years since I first started visiting Shawnee. You could say I've been working on this project since then, bringing together years of research and creating ties to the community. Since 2016, we've been performing a live version of the project. Because of the pandemic, I began to reimagine how this project could be experienced. This new iteration as a film creates a nice bookend to those performances, and contributes something new: somewhere between an experimental documentary and a music performance, it is immersive and expresses not only the social and political issues of the region, but the deep emotions contained there, too.
If you are unable to tune in today, you can watch anytime through March 23. Many thanks and best wishes -- Brian
Read about Shawnee, Ohio in the Columbus Alive
Let's face it -- it is nearly impossible to be an arts writer in Columbus, Ohio. That Joel Oliphint is able to do so and continue to write so well and with so much curiosity and openness is a miracle. Once again, Joel has written about both Shawnee, Ohio and the larger umbrella of Socially Engaged Art projects that I have been working on there, and I am so glad he has taken the time to understand and think deeply about them. You can read more about our interview and the project below.

Listen to a podcast about Forest Listening Rooms from Phantom Power
It was such a pleasure to work with Mack Hagood on an episode of his Phantom Power podcast, exploring and discussing Forest Listening Rooms -- it gave me a chance to recreate some of the sounds and voices from the project. It is also an experiential way to understand the project. Give it a listen below, or you can also find it on Apple or Google Podcasts, or other podcast services.
