June Newsletter: Duke Performances and North of the Internet
Hello friends near and far! This month's newsletter includes information on upcoming shows at Duke Performances, and a conversation for North of the Internet. Plus, I'm beginning a throwback section called "From the Archives," periodically revisiting highlights of older projects. Finally, stay tuned for more news from my A Blade of Grass project--Fracked Forest Listening Rooms--as it unfolds in the coming months. My best, Brian
"Shawnee, Ohio" Part of Duke Performances 2018-19 Season
Back in 2016, Duke Performances was a co-commissioner of the “Shawnee, Ohio” project (along with Wexner Center for the Arts and Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati). Now, I’m excited to bring “Shawnee” to Duke Performances this October 26 and 27 (2 nights!), as part of their 2018-19 season. What a stunning lineup of artists to be a part of.
In the season catalog, I get to share the same page (but not the same stage) as the legendary Emanuel Ax. The only other thing we’ve shared was a piano tuner back in 2003. Find the catalog here.
North of the Internet Conversation with Jerry David DeCicca
"Do you care what other people think about your music?"
"If you were of a different mind and talent, what musician would you want to play like who makes music nothing like your own?"
I had the pleasure of a conversation with my friend Jerry David DeCicca for North of the Internet, a fascinating website of connections, constellations, and design. We talked about whether we care what other people think, what musicians we'd like to play like who make music nothing like our own, and front porch music vs. concert hall music.
From the Archives: American Winter
Released in 2007, American Winter was the first of many projects to come out of my time as a Fellow in the Berea Appalachian Sound Archives. The album is comprised of archival songs, interviews, and in-between sounds combined with live instruments. American Winter was released on the Chicago avant-label Atavistic Records.
American Winter: Score
Last year, for its 10-year anniversary, I revised the musical score for American Winter. It now includes a complete transcription of all of the people recorded, and includes references to each sampled archival recording.
American Winter: Reviews
Read reviews from Thom Jurek at Allmusic and Clive Bell at The Wire, among many others, for American Winter.
